The M60 machinegun was introduced in 1957 as a companion to the M14 rifle. The M60 replaced the Browning M1919 and M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR). The M60 fires NATO 7.62mm ammunition and is used as a crew-served machinegun. The gun fires from the open bolt position, which enhances barrel cooling between bursts of fire. The M60 has a removable barrel, which can be quickly and easily changed to prevent the barrel from overheating. Rate of fire, 600 rpm.
